Vitamin D (25-OH) (ng/mL)

The 25-hydroxy vitamin D test measures your body’s stored vitamin D, reflecting weeks of sun exposure, diet, and supplementation combined. People test it because vitamin D supports bone, muscle, and immune function, and low levels are among the most common findings on routine blood work, especially in winter and at higher latitudes.

The importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D behaves more like a hormone than a vitamin: after skin synthesis or ingestion, the liver converts it to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the storage form this test measures, and the kidneys activate it as needed.[1] Receptors for the active form appear in bone, muscle, immune cells, and many other tissues.

Levels swing meaningfully with season, latitude, skin pigmentation, body weight, and age, a late-winter test can read 10–15 ng/mL below a late-summer one in the same person. Values below 20 ng/mL are commonly labeled deficient and 20–30 ng/mL insufficient, with many clinicians favoring the 30–60 ng/mL band as a practical target.[2]

Because vitamin D is fat-soluble and stores accumulate, more is not better indefinitely: sustained very high levels from aggressive supplementation are associated with elevated calcium and its complications.[3] If you test low, dose and duration of supplementation, and when to retest, typically after about three months, are worth setting with your doctor.

Can you take too much vitamin D?

Yes. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates, sustained high-dose supplementation can push blood levels above 100 ng/mL, which is associated with elevated calcium, nausea, and kidney strain. Toxicity from sunlight alone does not occur; it is essentially always supplement-driven, which is one reason periodic retesting matters.
